Claude for Startups: How to Apply in 2026
"If you own a domain you can apply. A free year of Claude Team, plus $1,000 in API credits."
That line has been travelling fast through founder communities. Is it true? Mostly, but it leaves out several conditions.
Anthropic announced the expanded Claude for Startups program on October 6, 2026 (TechCrunch, 2026). On October 8, 2026 we read the official program page, the terms and the application entry point line by line. This article lays out who qualifies for Claude for Startups, how the application works, how long review takes, and what you can actually do with the credits. Every number here traces back to Anthropic's own wording.

What Is Claude for Startups? The Three Main Benefits After the October 2026 Expansion
Claude for Startups is Anthropic's support program for startups. According to the official program page, approved founders get $1,000 in Claude API credits, a free year of Claude Team, and up to $45,000 in offers from participating partners (Claude for Startups program page, 2026). This is the version of the program after the October 2026 expansion.

The program contains more than those three headline items. Here is everything the official page mentions, together with the limit attached to each:
| Item | What you get | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Team | Free for one year | Up to five Premium seats; only for organizations new to Team |
| Claude API credits | $1,000 | Expire six months after they are granted; first-party Anthropic API only |
| Partner offers | Up to $45,000 | Provided by third-party companies, redeemed in the Claude Console |
| Technical office hours | Live sessions with Anthropic's Applied AI team | 45 minutes each, held every other week |
| API rate limits | Raised automatically for members who receive credits | The page does not state the new limits |
| VC top-up | Up to $100,000 in additional API credits | Only for companies backed by a partner VC, claimed through that VC |
There is one thing in this table that is easy to miss.
The headlines say "a free year" and "$1,000", but every row comes with a condition. Whether you get the benefit, and whether you can use all of it, is decided by the right-hand column.
Claude for Startups Eligibility: Company Age, Company Email and a Console Account
Anthropic states the eligibility for Claude for Startups in a single paragraph: startups founded in the last five years or funded in the last two, with a Claude Console account, a company email that matches the website's domain, and a short description of what they are building (Claude for Startups program page, 2026).
Broken down, that is four conditions:
| Condition | What Anthropic asks for | In plain terms |
|---|---|---|
| Company age | Founded in the last five years, or funded in the last two | Meeting either one is enough |
| Account | A Claude Console account | The application form is only visible after you sign in to the Console |
| A company email that matches your website's domain | If your site is example.com, the email must be @example.com | |
| Description | A short description of what you are building | The page sets no word count or format |
"Own a Domain and You Can Apply" Is Half Right
A domain is indeed one of the requirements. But what Anthropic asks for is a company email on that domain. Buying a domain while still receiving mail on a free email service does not meet it.
Then there is company age. A company founded more than five years ago, with no funding in the last two years, falls outside the stated range.
Not sure how old your company is? Companies in Taiwan can look up their public registration record, including the approved incorporation date, on the Ministry of Economic Affairs commerce and industry registration portal.
No Venture Funding Required, and No Stage Restriction
Many people assume programs like this are only for funded companies. This one is not. Anthropic states that the program is open to bootstrapped, pre-seed and venture-backed startups (Claude for Startups program page, 2026).
Are Taiwanese Companies Eligible for Claude for Startups?
The program terms list the regions that are not eligible: Belarus, China, Cuba, Iran, Myanmar, North Korea, Russia, Sudan, Syria, Crimea, and the Donetsk and Luhansk regions (Startup Program Official Terms, 2025). Taiwan is not on that list.
One detail deserves attention. The terms exclude not only companies established or operating in those regions, but also companies that plan to make Anthropic's services available to people located there. If your product mainly sells into one of the ineligible regions, assess that yourself before applying.
Does Applying for Claude for Startups Require a Tax ID or Company Registration?
The conditions listed on the official program page are company age, a Claude Console account, a company-domain email and a product description. A tax ID (in Taiwan, the Unified Business Number) or a company registration number is not among them. Which fields you actually have to fill in is determined by the application form you see after signing in.
The terms do say what the review considers: business traction, investment and funding, and Claude integration and usage, with final eligibility determined at Anthropic's sole discretion (Startup Program Official Terms, 2025). In other words, meeting every condition does not mean you will be approved. Our reading: the short description of what you are building matters more than most people expect, because it is the only thing a reviewer can read when judging "Claude integration and usage".

How to Apply for Claude for Startups: From Signing In to the Claude Console to Getting a Decision
Anthropic describes the application in one sentence: sign in to the Claude Console and fill out the application. Most applications are decided within minutes; the rest go to manual review, which usually takes two to three business days, and you get an email as soon as there is a decision (Claude for Startups program page, 2026).
The process comes down to four steps:
- Open the application page
- Sign in to, or create, a Claude Console account
- Fill out the application and submit it
- Wait for the decision email
We opened the application page ourselves. Before signing in, it stops at a sign-in screen saying you need to sign in or create a Console account to start your application. Two sign-in options are shown: continue with Google, or continue with email.
A suggestion about the order of things.
Eligibility requires a company email that matches your website's domain, so the simplest path is to register the Console account with your company-domain email from the start. If you open the account with a personal email first, you will have to sort out the mismatch later.
No Console account yet? The account registration section of our guide to buying Claude API access walks through it.

What the Free Year of Claude Team Covers: Five Premium Seats, New-to-Team Only
The free year of Claude Team has two boundaries: up to five Premium seats, and only for organizations that are new to Team. Anthropic's FAQ is blunt about it — organizations that already have a Team plan do not qualify for this offer (Claude for Startups program page, 2026).
That means two things.
First, if your team is larger than five people, you pay for the sixth person onward. Teams of five or fewer get the most out of it.
Second, if your company is already paying for Claude Team, this benefit is off the table. The API credits and partner offers are not affected by that restriction.
One more question worth asking early: what happens after the year?
When the free period ends, continuing means paying the regular price. Once a team is used to a tool, stopping is rarely easy. Put the cost of continuing into your budget on the day you apply.
How to Use the $1,000 in Claude API Credits: Six-Month Expiry and Where They Apply
The $1,000 in Claude API credits expire six months after they are granted (Claude for Startups program page, 2026). Unused credits do not carry over. So the real question about these credits is whether you can use them within six months.
The Credits Only Work on Anthropic's First-Party API
Anthropic's FAQ has a question on exactly this: can the credits be used on AWS Bedrock or Google Vertex AI? The answer is no. The credits apply to the first-party Claude API through the Claude Console (Claude for Startups program page, 2026).
If your system already runs on AWS or Google Cloud and you plan to call Claude through the cloud platform, these credits will not help. Decide whether you will call Claude through a cloud platform before you apply.
Claude API Rate Limits Go Up Too
Members who receive credits through the program automatically get higher API rate limits (Claude for Startups program page, 2026). The page does not say how much higher; you will need to check the actual numbers in the Console after approval.
Companies Backed by a Partner VC Get a Top-Up
If your company is backed by a VC in Anthropic's partner network, you can get up to $100,000 in additional API credits, claimed through that VC (Claude for Startups program page, 2026).
How to Plan $1,000 in Credits Across Six Months
Our suggestion is to plan backwards:
- Month one: list the features you want to test and get the flow working on a cheaper model first
- Months two to four: move the features you will actually ship onto the production model and measure real monthly usage
- Month five onward: use the measured usage to estimate what you will pay each month once the credits are gone
For how each model is billed, see Claude API pricing. To compare free tiers across providers, see our free AI API recommendations.
After the Credits Run Out, Taiwanese Companies Usually Hit Two Problems
Once the credits are used up or expire, you are back to regular billing. What comes next? In CloudInsight's experience serving companies in Taiwan, two questions come up most often: credit card payments being declined, and not being able to get a Taiwan Government Uniform Invoice.
We have a detailed article on each: what to do when your card is declined for an AI API, and how to get invoices for AI APIs in Taiwan.

Claude Startup Stack and Applied AI Office Hours: Resources Beyond the Credits
The Claude Startup Stack is a set of partner offers that Anthropic values at up to $45,000 in total, redeemed by members in the Claude Console. Note that these benefits are offered by independent third-party companies, not by Anthropic (Claude for Startups program page, 2026).
These are some of the partners listed on the official page on October 8, 2026. The list may change:
| Partner | Offer listed on the official page | Category |
|---|---|---|
| ClickHouse | $5,000 in ClickHouse Cloud credits | Data and analytics |
| ElevenLabs | 12 months free, with 33 million characters | Development |
| Granola | 3 months of Business free, up to 10 seats | Growth |
| Hex | 6 months free on the Enterprise plan | Data and analytics |
| Gamma | 25% off the first year of Gamma Pro annual | Design |
| Firecrawl | 2.5x the plan's monthly credits for a year | Data and analytics |
$45,000 sounds like a lot. But that figure is the ceiling you reach by adding up every offer.
The value you actually get depends on how many of these tools your team was going to use anyway. A discount on a tool you already planned to pay for is a real saving. An offer on a tool you would never use is worth nothing, however large it is.
Applied AI Office Hours
Members can join live sessions with Anthropic's Applied AI team, 45 minutes each, held every other week. After you are accepted, the registration link arrives by email and appears in the Claude Startups portal (Claude for Startups program page, 2026).
For a technical team, this may be worth as much as the credits. Chances to put architecture questions directly to the vendor's own engineers are rare.
Terms to Read Before You Apply: Public Use of Your Name, Tax, and Program Changes
Before you press submit, three things in the terms are worth knowing. The first is the one most often overlooked: once you are approved, Anthropic may use your company name and logo to publicly identify you as a program member and an Anthropic customer (Startup Program Official Terms, 2025).
| Term | What it says | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Name and logo | Anthropic may use them publicly to identify you as a member and customer | Think it through if your product is still under wraps |
| Tax | Recipients determine for themselves whether the credits create a tax obligation | Ask your accountant before applying |
| Program changes | Anthropic may cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the program at its sole discretion | Do not build your operating plan on these credits always being there |
| Eligibility | Determined at Anthropic's sole discretion | Meeting the conditions is not the same as being approved |
The tax clause is the one many teams skip.
The terms say recipients are solely responsible for determining whether receiving API credits creates any tax obligations in their jurisdiction (Startup Program Official Terms, 2025). That does not mean tax is necessarily due, but someone does need to ask. For the bookkeeping side, see Claude invoices in Taiwan and how to get invoices for AI APIs.
One more point: who presses submit?
The terms require that the person accepting them on behalf of the company has the authority to bind the company. This is not something to hand to an intern.
FAQ
Can a company in Taiwan apply for Claude for Startups?
Yes, you can submit an application. The program terms list 12 ineligible regions, including China, Russia, Iran and North Korea, and Taiwan is not among them. That is not a guarantee of approval, though: eligibility is still decided by Anthropic based on business traction, funding and Claude usage.
Does applying for Claude for Startups require a tax ID or company registration?
The official program page lists four conditions: founded in the last five years or funded in the last two, a Claude Console account, a company email that matches your website's domain, and a short product description. The page does not list a tax ID or company registration number. The actual fields are whatever the application form shows after you sign in.
How long does Claude for Startups review take?
According to Anthropic, most applications are decided within minutes, and the rest go to manual review, which usually takes 2 to 3 business days. You get an email as soon as there is a decision.
We already use Claude Team. Can we still get the free year?
No. Anthropic states that only organizations new to Team qualify for the free year with up to 5 Premium seats. Organisations that already have a Team plan can still receive the $1,000 in API credits and the partner offers.
Can Claude for Startups API credits be used on AWS Bedrock or Google Vertex AI?
No. The $1,000 in credits apply only to Anthropic's first-party Claude API through the Claude Console. They cannot be used on third-party platforms such as AWS Bedrock or Google Vertex AI, and they expire 6 months after they are granted.
Who Should Apply for Claude for Startups, and What to Do After the Credits Run Out
Claude for Startups fits this kind of team best: the company is less than five years old, already receives mail on its own domain, and will definitely use the Claude API over the next six months. If all three are true, applying costs almost nothing, and both the $1,000 in credits and the year of Team are real resources.
When should you think twice?
- You plan to call Claude through AWS Bedrock or Google Vertex AI: the credits will not apply
- You already pay for Claude Team: the free year is not available
- Your product is still confidential: after approval your company name may be listed publicly as a member
Checklist Before You Submit a Claude for Startups Application
- Confirm that your incorporation date or most recent funding round falls within Anthropic's time limits
- Create the Claude Console account with your company-domain email
- Prepare a clear product description that states where Claude will be used
- Have someone with authority to bind the company submit it, after reading the terms
The credits and the free period both end. Six months and twelve months from now, Claude becomes a fixed monthly cost. At that point, payment methods, invoices and multi-platform billing are what you deal with every day. Our AI API enterprise procurement guide is a good place to prepare.
