Alibaba Cloud Complete Guide: From Beginner to Advanced, Essential Reading for International Users [2025]

You're evaluating cloud platforms, but finding that Alibaba Cloud information is mostly in Chinese? Or you already know you need to enter the China market, but aren't sure whether to choose the International or China site?

This guide will explain everything about Alibaba Cloud in the simplest terms.

Whether you're new to cloud computing or looking to switch from AWS or GCP to Alibaba Cloud, this article will save you countless hours of research.

Illustration 1: Alibaba Cloud Service Overview

What is Alibaba Cloud?

Alibaba Cloud is the cloud computing platform under Alibaba Group.

Founded in 2009, it's now the world's third-largest and Asia Pacific's largest cloud service provider.

Sounds impressive, but what does this mean for you?

Why Should International Users Know About Alibaba Cloud?

Three reasons:

1. The Only Choice for China Market

If your customers are in China, AWS and GCP can't operate there. Alibaba Cloud is one of the few cloud platforms that can legally operate within mainland China.

2. Competitive Pricing

In the Asia Pacific region, Alibaba Cloud is typically 10-20% cheaper than AWS. Especially for Hong Kong and Singapore data centers.

3. Complete Chinese Language Support

Technical documentation, customer service, and admin interfaces are all available in Chinese. This matters for teams not comfortable with English technical documentation.

Alibaba Cloud vs Alibaba: Understanding the Relationship

Many people confuse Alibaba Cloud with Alibaba.

Simply put:

  • Alibaba: E-commerce group (parent company of Taobao, Tmall, Alipay)
  • Alibaba Cloud: Cloud services division under Alibaba

Alibaba Cloud was originally created to support the massive traffic during Taobao's Singles' Day sales. It now independently provides services to external customers, doing essentially what AWS does.

Alibaba Cloud International vs China Site: Which Should You Choose?

This is the most confusing issue for many users.

Alibaba Cloud has two completely independent systems:

ItemInternational SiteChina Site
URLalibabacloud.comaliyun.com
Account SystemIndependentIndependent (requires China phone)
Payment MethodsVisa / Mastercard / PayPalAlipay / WeChat Pay
CurrencyUSDRMB
Data CentersGlobal (including Hong Kong, Singapore)Mainly within China
Compliance StandardsGDPR, SOCChina Cybersecurity Law

Recommendation for International Users

Choose the International Site.

The reasons are simple:

  • No Chinese phone number required
  • No Chinese ID real-name verification required
  • Can pay with international credit cards
  • Interface available in multiple languages

The only exception: If your service must be hosted within mainland China (e.g., ICP filing requirements), then you need to consider the China site.

For more details on the International site, see Alibaba Cloud International Complete Guide: Registration, Services, and Pricing.

Alibaba Cloud Core Services

Alibaba Cloud has over 200 products, but these are the ones you'll actually use:

Compute Services: ECS Cloud Server

ECS (Elastic Compute Service) is Alibaba Cloud's virtual server service.

Functions similar to AWS EC2.

Think of it as: renting a computer in Alibaba Cloud's data center, where you can install any system and run any program you want.

Use Cases:

  • Website hosting
  • App backend
  • Development and testing environments

Tip for International Users: Choose the Hong Kong data center for lowest latency (approximately 30-50ms to Asia).

For complete ECS setup tutorial, see Alibaba Cloud ECS Tutorial: Server Specifications, Configuration, and Pricing Guide.

Storage Services: OSS and Cloud Drive

Alibaba Cloud's storage services come in two types:

OSS (Object Storage Service)

  • Enterprise-grade object storage
  • Similar to AWS S3
  • Ideal for storing images, videos, backup files
  • Supports API integration

Enterprise users see Alibaba Cloud OSS Complete Tutorial: Object Storage Setup, Pricing, and Use Cases.

Alibaba Cloud Drive

  • Personal cloud storage
  • Similar to Google Drive, Dropbox
  • Features large free storage capacity
  • No download speed limits

Personal users see Alibaba Cloud Drive Registration Guide: Download, Usage, and Account Sharing [2025].

Network Services: CDN, DNS, DDoS Protection

CDN (Content Delivery Network)

Caches your website content to nodes around the world. When users access it, they read from the nearest node, making it faster.

Alibaba Cloud has 2,800+ CDN nodes in China, the most comprehensive coverage.

DNS (Domain Name Service)

Points your domain name (e.g., example.com) to your server IP.

Supports smart resolution: automatically directs users to the nearest server based on their location.

DDoS Protection

Basic protection is free, can block attacks up to 5Gbps. High-defense services are paid separately.

For detailed setup, see Alibaba Cloud CDN and DNS Tutorial: Acceleration Setup and DDoS Protection Guide.

Enterprise Services: Enterprise Email

Alibaba Cloud provides enterprise email services with custom domains.

Deeply integrated with DingTalk, suitable for companies already using the Alibaba ecosystem.

Free version provides 5 accounts with 5GB space each.

For email setup steps, see Alibaba Cloud Enterprise Email Tutorial: Setup, Pricing, and Complete Review.

AI Services: Tongyi Models and Bailian Platform

Alibaba Cloud's AI services have developed rapidly in recent years.

Tongyi Qianwen (Qwen)

Alibaba Cloud's self-developed large language model, competing with GPT-4 and Claude. Chinese language understanding is its strength.

Bailian Platform

An AI application development platform similar to AWS Bedrock. Already integrated with popular open-source models like DeepSeek.

For Tongyi and Bailian details, see Alibaba Cloud AI Services: Tongyi Models, Bailian Platform, and DeepSeek Integration.

Alibaba Cloud Registration Tutorial for International Users

The International site registration process is actually quite simple.

Step 1: Go to the International Site

Open your browser and enter alibabacloud.com.

You can switch languages in the top right corner.

Step 2: Click "Free Account"

There's a "Free Account" button in the top right corner of the homepage. Click it.

Step 3: Choose Registration Method

You can register with email or phone number.

We recommend using a company email for easier management later.

Step 4: Fill in Basic Information

  • Country/Region: Select your country
  • Fill in password (at least 8 characters, including uppercase, lowercase, and numbers)
  • Check the agreement checkbox

Step 5: Verify Email

Alibaba Cloud will send a verification email to your inbox.

Click the link to complete verification.

Step 6: Set Up Payment Method

Bind Visa, Mastercard, or PayPal.

Binding a credit card won't charge you immediately—it's just for identity verification.

Real-Name Verification Notes

Real-name verification on the International site is optional.

You can use most services without real-name verification.

If verification is needed, you can use your passport—no Chinese ID required.

Common Registration Issues

Q: Not receiving verification email? Check your spam folder, or try resending.

Q: Credit card verification failed? Confirm your card is enabled for international transactions. Some banks require a phone call to enable this.

Q: Do I need a Chinese phone number? Not for the International site. If the system asks for a Chinese phone number, you may have gone to the wrong site (aliyun.com).

Alibaba Cloud Pricing and Costs

Alibaba Cloud has two billing methods:

Pay-as-you-go

Pay for what you use, billed hourly.

Pros: Flexible, can stop anytime Cons: Higher unit price

Suitable for: Testing environments, applications with variable traffic

Subscription (Prepaid)

Pay in advance, similar to a lease.

Pros: 30-50% cheaper Cons: Need to estimate usage, pay upfront

Suitable for: Production environments, applications with stable load

Common Service Price Reference

ServiceSpecificationsPay-as-you-goAnnual (approx.)
ECS2 cores 4GB (Hong Kong)~$0.08/hour~$40/month
OSSStorage fee$0.02/GB/month-
CDNTraffic feeFrom $0.05/GB-
DNSFree tier$0$0

Hidden Costs to Watch

Many people only look at instance costs and forget these:

  • Traffic fees: Outbound internet traffic costs money
  • Snapshot fees: Automatic system backups cost money
  • Cross-region transfer fees: Transferring data between regions costs money

We recommend checking your bill weekly to avoid unexpected overages.
